Do you know the importance of gut health? Gut health is where it all begins. Consuming probiotics and prebiotics the right way without overdoing them is crucial for your microbiome and gut. In this article, you can learn about how to make your own great Indian powerful probiotic at home. In the video Luke Coutinho, a Holistic Nutritionist specialising in the field of Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine explaining about the process of making powerful probiotics at home.

How to make the great Indian powerful probiotic at home?

Many people think that taking probiotic pills or a bowl of curd is all good for gut health. But we need to understand that the human body and the gut don’t work that way. In your gut, you have microbes, good microbes and bad microbes. Good microbes help you digest your food. So before we decide on how to get the good bacteria in the colony to grow and flourish, let’s talk about the bad bacteria and what happens with bad bacteria.

Luke Coutinho, is a Holistic Nutritionist specialising in the field of Integrative and Lifestyle Medicine. Luke along with his team of qualified Doctors and trained nutritionists designs wellness plans with a holistic approach to prevention, weight and disease management with expertise in cancer care. His programs are personalised and customised according to an individual’s lifestyle and revolve around the 4 pillars of good health: Quality Sleep, Balanced Nutrition, Emotional Detox and Adequate Exercise.

What keeps your bad microbes happy and growing?

Sugar, white sugar, junk food, processed food, highly processed food, genetically modified food, and foods that are high in soy especially genetically modified. These are foods that your bad microbes want. So what I’m gonna share with you is non-dairy. You can make this at home. Your grandma, your grandmother probably made it for you while you were a kid. So let’s get straight to it. I call it the great Indian probiotic.

Items required for making powerful probiotic at home

  1. Large jar
  2. Carrots/Beetroot
  3. Salt
  4. Mustard seeds

Process of making powerful probiotic at home

  • Fill the jar with water
  • Add a tablespoon of salt and crushed mustard seeds
  • Add chopped beetroot/carrot
  • Cover and store
  • Keep for 5-6 days
  • Tangy and sour
  • Ready

You need a large glass jar or a ceramic jar, four or five carrots. But I prefer to use three to four medium-sized beetroots and get really dark red beetroots. One tablespoon of salt could be rock salt, it could be pink salt, and it could be black salt. One tablespoon of crushed mustard seed. Fill up a litre jar or a litre ceramic jar with water. Add a tablespoon of salt. Add a  tablespoon of the crushed mustard seeds. Chop the beetroot into juliens into thin finger bits and put it in this water and cover this with a lid or a thin muslin or a cheesecloth. Keep it for about five to six days.

Every third day you take a wooden spoon and just stir it. Stir the contents together. After six to seven days you want to taste it. If it’s tangy and sour your probiotic drink is ready. Strain it, pour it out. You can have a glass of this liquid every day and the beetroot could be eaten like a pickle with your normal Indian food.

Make probiotic at home with leftover cooked rice

There’s also another very simple one. Take leftover cooked rice in the night and just soak it in a little bit of water overnight. In the morning strain the water out, add a little tempering of curry leaves, mustard seeds, and a little bit of chilli and you eat that little small bowl. It could be just three tablespoons of rice and that’s a fantastic probiotic that is dairy-free again.

If you do this I can promise you will change the health of your gut. When you change the health of your gut there are so many beautiful things that are going to happen in your body. Your skin is going to look better, your hair’s going to look better, and your energy levels are going to improve because your cells get the right nutrients. If you have any inflammation in the body caused because of autoimmune issues, thyroid problems, or joint pains that tend to get better as well when we clean up your gut and let the gut function the way it’s supposed to be.

A healthy diet is important for a healthy life

Avoid junk foods and eat organic vegetables and organic food. The second method of rice is not a new thing. I remember, years back this type of rice mixed with a little curd, green chilli, and salt was a normal food in many houses. Even today many people like this. Old generation people were eating maximum organic and natural foods. But today junk foods and processed foods are the best choices for many young people and that creates many health problems related to gas trouble, stomach upset and others.
